Ernest Cook Trust (ECT) and Cumbria Youth Alliance (CYA) have come together to deliver an exciting new programme land based education programme, 'Growing Horizons', which will support young people across Cumbria over the next five years. It is based on CYAs successful 'Bridging Horizons' programme which brought Civil Engineering as a potential career into schools.

The programme has been designed to respond to declining engagement in land based careers, widening rural disadvantages, and the risk of young people with complex needs becoming invisible to education, training and employment systems.

It is a coordinated, place-based development programme that supports young people aged 13+ to build confidence, skills, and future pathways, whether land-based, technical, or beyond, with farming and land stewardship as a core but not exclusive opportunity route.

The programme supports statutory education requirements through both targeted curriculum alignment at KS3 & 4 and in fulfilment of the Department for Education’s updated secondary careers guidance.

Through employer engagement, industry visits, practical experiences and ongoing support, young people will gain authentic insight into the sector and the opportunities available to them.

Early stages of the programme will involve

Year 9s at Appleby and Kirkby Stephen schools

  • Assemblies in these two schools that have had need identified by data.
  • 6 x 2.5-hour sessions on various land management aspects, with personal development opportunities throughout.
  • A trip to a working farm or business to allow them to see things in action.
  • A celebration of the young people's development.

When these Year 9s move to Year 10

  • 6 days out in land management gaining a variety of hands on and applicable experience across Cumbria with mentors and one to one support.

Building on the success of previous 'Building Horizons' programme, the most valuable element of the approach is the direct involvement of industry professionals. Therefore, throughout the programme, an advisory group will shape the content based on industry needs, to ensure that the learning delivered is relevant, current and aligned with the skills and experiences employers are looking for, enabling them to shape their future workforce.
