Overview

Footprinting of a farm business, product or enterprise is a key part of measuring greenhouse gas emissions. This online learning course from BASIS Classroom provides key background information and details to carry out a carbon footprint, to analyse the results and think through mitigation measures and practices to reduce emissions and increase sequestration.

This practical course covers the following content:

At a glance

  • The climate change context and our commitments to net zero
  • Ways of measuring emissions – national, farm, enterprise and product specific measurements
  • The key tools for greenhouse gas footprinting in the UK, including Agrecalc, Cool Farm Tool and Farm Carbon Toolkit
  • The key measurement and data requirements needed to carry out carbon footprinting, for example land use, cropping/livestock details, fuel and energy, inputs (seed, fertiliser, agronomic, feed), soil measurements, waste
  • Work through a footprinting tool, using example farm data provided with the course or your own information
  • Understanding of the results that are produced from the footprinting tools, including the emissions produced and their sources
  • How the results from the tools can be used to support decisions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improve sequestration potential
