A Day With Jack Ravenscroft from JSR Countryside
Services

This is the latest instalment of our Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) funded "Day with..." series. Thanks to FiPL funding from the North Pennines National Landscape.

JSR Countryside Services is a small business which carries out environmental and access works for landowners and organisations, based near Penrith. The business conducts work in the North Pennines National Landscape as well as the Lake District National Park and all areas in between.

The company carries out tasks such as installation of access infrastructure, tree planting and aftercare, drystone walling, and manual scrub management/vegetation clearance. It specialises in working with volunteer groups and in remote and/or difficult to access places where most types of machinery would struggle.

As the Owner and Operative, Jack Ravenscroft set up the company after working in various roles such as an Access Field Officer and as a Farm Worker, so he can stay directly involved in the practical aspects of land management, working outdoors in a variety of locations. No two days are the same!

Setting up the business represents another step in Jack’s long process of gathering skills and experience relative to the role, from practical qualifications such as chainsaw and strimmer tickets, to on-the-job learning gained throughout his career so far. For example, working with volunteers, carrying out access surveys and understanding access and environmental legislation. The process of development is always ongoing, and he is actively seeking out opportunities to develop his skills through courses and opportunities.
