We spent the day with Dr Dave Harvey, at the Institute for Outdoor Learning North West Conference 2025, discussing how we can work together to overcome barriers to training in Cumbria, creating real opportunities for people. The conference was held at the Field Studies Council site, at Castle Head near Grange-over-Sands, and gave professionals in all areas of the Outdoor Learning sector the opportunity to come together, attend workshops, hear from speakers and network, therefore fostering new connections to bring about new opportunities in and around Cumbria and the northwest.
Dr Dave Harvey runs his own outdoor learning consultancy, training and research business, Dave Harvey Outdoor Learning, focusing on improving the quality of provision and equitable access to the outdoors. He has a number of voluntary roles that include North West regional Chair of the Institute for Outdoor Learning, and Chair of The Outdoor Partnership (Coastal Cumbria) stakeholder group, as well as his role on the Advisory Group of the Land + Nature Skills Service.
The benefits of the outdoors should be available to everyone, but currently access to them is unfair and unequal. Through consultancy, research and training, my aim is to foster positive change that contributes to developing the sector, leading to increased participation and life-long, responsible engagement with the outdoors.
