Stonemasonry

Stonemasonry is a heritage craft focused on shaping, repairing and building with stone. Stonemasons work on projects such as walls, floors, memorials, bridges and historic buildings, using both traditional hand skills and modern tools. The role requires care, accuracy and patience, especially when working on older structures where materials and techniques must be matched sympathetically.

As a Stonemason you could be involved in cutting and dressing stone, setting out work, mixing mortars, carrying out repairs and helping to conserve important built heritage. You may work for a specialist contractor, conservation organisation or self-employed business, and the role can lead into wider heritage construction and restoration careers.

A story of local stonemasonry at Honister Slate mine

"Slate working at Honister Slate Mine involves the extraction and processing of high-quality slate that has been used for roofing, flooring, and even decorative pieces for generations. Honister is unique in that it is one of the last working slate mines in the UK, and it remains a major producer of slate roofing materials. The slate is hand-mined, split (Riven), and cut into a range of products, including roofing slates, flooring tiles, and bespoke items. The craftsmanship at Honister remains traditional, with skilled workers using both time-honoured techniques and modern technology to produce slate products."
