Hedgerows are an integral part of our landscape and have been with us since the bronze age
They are amazing habitats and provide benefits including livestock control & shelter, wildlife corridors, carbon capture and flood management. The management of hedges has been passed through generations of farmers and land managers and it is essential that good hedgerow management is delivered for generations to come.
Megan Gimber, People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES), has designed the Healthy Hedgerows App, which is a great resource for surveying hedgerows. The app is also recommended by DEFRA as tool to accessing grants through the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI).
Friends of the Lake District are putting on a free course ‘Healthy Hedgerows Surveying’ on Tuesday 5th November at Low Beckside Farm, Mungrisdale. Megan Gimber will lead the day with discussions on developing a hedge management plan and suitable management options.
