Side Pike and Lingmoor Fell: A Story of Fire and Ice
Side Pike is an exceptional area with a variety of rocks from the Borrowdale Volcanic group (BVG) many of which can be found elsewhere within the high fells of the Lake District National Park. Although Side Pike is geologically very complex and its origins much debated, you can encounter a wide range of rocks, with an enormous range of exciting detail, here.
The aim of this session is to help you get to know a range of rocks types and piece together a coherent story about them, using the clues which they now present to us amidst the effects of millions of years since they were formed. We'll also look at the shape of the landscape, imagining how the great valleys, ghylls and hills were modified by a much more recent period of glaciation. What we see in Langdale can also be applied to other areas in The Park.
Full explanations, descriptions and interpretations of what we see will be provided, along with a pamphlet written specially for the day.
