This is a brilliant opportunity to experience Cumbria Woodlands 'Plantation on Ancient Woodland Site' (PAWS) project firsthand. Great How is a good example of different conditions you would find in a PAWS as it has a well-managed SSSI and broadleaf plantation as well as a conifer plantation and a host of ancient woodland features.
During the session you will hear from Jamie Chaplin-Brice (Ancient Woodland Advisor, Cumbria Woodlands), Andrew Wright (Woodland Officer, United Utilities) and Dan Castell (Woodland Biodiversity Officer, United Utilities).
You will learn about the threats and condition of Ancient Woodland, and remedial works associated with restoration. You will also see and learn about the challenges of terrain, access, sensitive sites and the associated costs.
Note that at times you will be following a public footpath which varies from steep steps to singletrack to boardwalk and is loose underfoot in places. Otherwise you will be walking on a well-metalled forestry road.
