The CLTH programme, developed by The British Horse Society (BHS), is designed to support children and young people aged 5–25 who may benefit from an alternative to traditional classroom-based education. Delivered from our specialist equestrian centre near Keswick, the programme blends ridden and non-ridden horse activities with structured, goal-focused learning.
We welcome participants who may be disengaged from education, facing social, emotional or behavioural challenges, or living with SEND or SEMH needs. The sessions are highly individualised, enabling young people to learn at their own pace in a calm, supportive, and non-judgemental environment. The programme is delivered through two award frameworks • Achieve – a structured pathway with measurable outcomes, often leading towards qualifications • Explorer – a more flexible approach, supporting engagement and personal growth without the pressure of formal assessment. For those working towards qualifications, we offer Ofqual-regulated Personal Development Qualifications (PDQs) at Entry Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 – equivalent to GCSE grades. These vocational qualifications recognise personal progress, practical skills, and employability development. Our aim is to help each participant develop six key life skills:
